Cuomo orders National Guard to take ventilators from hospitals without urgent need

Governor Andrew Cuomo said Friday that he will sign an executive order directing the National Guard to take ventilators and personal protective equipment from New York facilities where the need isn’t urgent and redistribute them to places with higher need. “I apologize to those institutions,” Cuomo said. But, he added, “there could be several hundred excess ventilators in hospitals that don’t need them right now.” Of the possibility of lawsuits over the order, he said, “If they want to sue me for borrowing their excess ventilators to save lives, let them sue me.”

Ahead of an expected CDC recommendation that Americans wear cloth masks to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Mayor Bill de Blasio told New Yorkers on Press Release Distribution Services In New York City Thursday to “wear a face covering when you go outside and will be near other people.” He stressed that the masks should not be hospital-grade. “You can create your own version,” he said on MSNBC Friday. “You can be creative and put whatever decoration you want on it. It can be as homemade as you want. But that’s what we want you to do: something homemade.”
The mayor also announced a loosening of rules concerning who can get free meals from public schools. Now, anyone who needs food can get it from the 435 sites across the five boroughs. Previously, the free food was only available to students and their families.
Javits will begin accepting COVID-19 patients
The 2,500-bed medical facility housed in the Javits Center will soon begin taking patients infected with COVID-19. The state-owned facility was converted to a hospital for non-COVID patients with the goal of freeing up hospital beds for the neediest patients. But it’s New York City News become clear in recent days that the state would benefit more from using the beds for those infected with the novel coronavirus. So Cuomo asked President Trump for his approval to use the temporary hospital, which is staffed by the military, to treat COVID-19 patients.
Coronavirus-related hate crimes against Asians up in NYC
The NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force has investigated 11 attacks against Asians in 2020 and they’ve all come since March 11, the department said this week. In each of those attacks, the victims were “targeted due to discrimination based on the Coronavirus pandemic.” The Wall Street Journal describes one of the attacks:
